ABOUT WS2 WS2 had its beginning in the NASA Space Program. It was found that by applying finely divided high purity particles of tungsten disulfide to a surface, a durable lubricious coating resulted which performed well in a vacuum. The use of this remarkable material has been broadened to include all aerospace and automotive applications and now has been found to offer exceptional advantages to the plastics industry. Tungsten Disulfide (WS2) is a dichalcogenide solid lubricant that does not depend on adsorption for its lubricating qualities. Its friction coefficient is between 0.5 to 0.15. WS2 can be applied by an organic or inorganic polymer coating, by physical vapor deposition (PVD), or by using its intermolecular forces for form an ionic bond to a surface (Ionic Deposition) For those applications involving mold release, the Ionic Deposition process is the most practical. Molds and parts are conditioned by removing all surface contaminants. Under a controlled atmosphere, sub micron sized particles of pure WS are applied to the surfaces. The WS2 shares electrons with atoms in the surface and becomes a part of the metal.
